A Rebellious Shortened URL

Laurence Brown | Saturday, February 04, 2012 | | | Best Blogger Tips
Anyone who has ever entered the mysterious world of Twitter will no doubt be familiar with the concept of shortened URLs. For those who aren't, shortened URLs are like dwarf versions of an actual URL. For example, a shortened version of www.theindytribune.com is http://bit.ly/wN6q7v.

So you'll imagine our amusement when we came across this beauty of a shortened URL, which, coincidentally, was a link to an Indy Tribune article that had synced with Twitter via Facebook..

Twitter CEO Doesn't Have Heart to Tell Occupy Protesters That Twitter a Multi-Billion Dollar Company

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - As the Occupy Movement continues to promote its anti-corporate message across several major U.S. cities, the CEO of Twitter - the social network that thousands of activists have turned to to spread the word - cannot quite bring himself to tell activists that Twitter Inc. is a multi-billion dollar enterprise and that he himself identifies as a member of the so-called 1%.

Speaking at a tech event in San Francisco, Dick Costolo insisted that while he is excited by all the buzz that the Occupy Movement is generating, he cannot help but feel that the thousands of protesters who use the service multiple times a day would feel pretty ridiculous if they found out.

"I'd feel just awful telling them now," said the 48-year-old. "They've clearly put a lot of effort into these demonstrations and have repeatedly made known their disdain for huge businesses. I just don't have the heart to tell them that Twitter is one of those businesses."

Using hashtags such as #occupywallstreet and #wearethe99percent, huge numbers of demonstrators have taken to their Twitter profiles to heighten awareness of the inherent corruption within mega corporations - seemingly unaware that Twitter Inc. has an estimated net worth of approximately $3.7 billion.

"I might break it to them gently in a lunchtime Tweet or something, I don't know," continued Costolo. "I imagine they'll be pretty pissed when they find out. Perhaps the best thing to do is just keep it to myself. For now at least."

As a newly appointed member of President Obama's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, Costolo's power extends beyond just social media - another fact that he has remained silent on since the Occupy protests began back in September.

"It would blow their minds if they found out that I sit on a government committee, while concurrently raking in more money daily than they'll ever make in a life time. No, at this point, what they don't know won't hurt them."

Local Dad Still Not Getting Facebook

Laurence Brown | Friday, December 09, 2011 | | | Best Blogger Tips
CASTLETON - The concept, purpose and popularity of the social networking site, Facebook, is still reportedly lost on local father of three, Michael Mitchum, whose attempts to sign up to the site's services today left the 59-year-old in a total state of confusion.

Watching his offspring effortlessly navigate the site and its many thousand applications, Mr Mitchum made the decision to set up his own login details, ultimately forgetting his password within 23 minutes of establishing a profile.

"What is... why can't I login?", he said. "This thing is so confusing. I don't... ah, wait; there we go".

After logging into his profile at the eighth attempt, Mr Mitchum was confronted with the overbearing task of clicking on, and reading, a message posted to his wall by daughter Kathryn, 21.

"A message? Is this the same thing as an email? I'm absolutely lost", he said, knocking back a mug of coffee. "What ever happened to just sitting down and talking?"

Receiving guidance from his son Nick, 25, Mitchum was at least able to update his Facebook status. However, his frustration was exacerbated further when he accidentally shared the update mid-sentence.

"I'm not really sure what this status thing means, but apparently the four friends I added earlier are reading it as 'Michael Mitchum doesn't fully under...".

"I think I'm going to have to stick to writing letters", he continued.

Meanwhile, in a gesture of compassion, his offspring insisted that they are going to give their father a couple of days to rest before leading him through the rigors of understanding Twitter.

NEW YORK, NY - Canadian pop-star and school kid Justin Bieber was tragically killed today when a truck driver accidentally ran over the star in downtown New York, reports bored Twitter user @JoshuaDJ22.

In a 120-character post, @JoshuaDJ22 announced that Bieber - singer of hits One Time, One Less Lonely Girl and Baby - was killed shortly after leaving the Island Records office complex this afternoon.

"Awful news. Just heard that Justin Bieber is dead. Got run over by a truck just after recording a new single. Sad times.", said the post.

Thousands of Bieber's followers have expressed their deep disbelief at the revelation, with Juicy_Lucy48 insisting that "this is all a bunch of bs. justins not dead,,, I know he aint. his twitter profile was updated 10 mins ago", while a concerned MeganZZZ responded with: "holy crap! Is Justin Bieber really dead?".

The tragic announcement comes just days after fellow bored Tweeter MazziBanter4 revealed that the 16-year-old Bieber had previously contracted AIDS from his mother and routinely "took it up the ass from (R&B singer) Usher".

Ballard Reaches Out to Young Voters By Subtly Mentioning Twitter in Campaign Speech

INDIANAPOLIS - Incumbent mayor and current Republican nominee Greg Ballard today reached out to the city's younger voters by making subtle references to the social networking giant Twitter during a campaign speech at Butler University.

Distancing himself from the usual rhetoric of fiscal responsibility, the current mayor regaled students at Clowes Memorial Hall with an amusing anecdote about his attempts at connecting with voters online.

"Okay, let me just caveat this by saying I'm not the most technically savvy guy," chuckled Ballard. "When I first used Twitter, I thought it was some kind of a throwback to Tweety Pie. Never thought I'd be able to share my strong leadership credentials via an animated bird. But seriously, folks, Twitter is a great way to keep up-to-date with what I'm doing throughout the campaign."

"Did I mention that I'm also on Facebook?" he continued.

Opening up the discussion to the floor, Ballard fielded questions about the current state of Indianapolis' political and architectural infrastructure during a 20-minute Q&A session.

Following a student's question about the limitations of incessant road development across the city, Ballard was unequivocal in his response: "I just love to Tweet."

With Ballard poised to lay out his vision for the next four years later today, his campaign team insists that his list of policies will easily fit within Twitter's 140-character limit.
