INDIANAPOLIS - Concluding his broadcast on the latest inner-city shooting Monday, Channel 13 Eyewitness News anchor John Stehr advised Indiana to stay safe, but only in the event that doing so would not compromise the station's ratings.

Pensively looking into the camera, the former CBS News correspondent said that Channel 13's "number one priority is making sure people are
alert to the dangers" of their local area, but stressed that the network could not function "if absolutely no one was murdered."

"Sure, we want Hoosiers to feel safe from day-to-day," reported the 54-year-old. "But not if that means we no longer have anything truly horrible to report. While we encourage you to be vigilant, it's okay if a couple of you want to wander aimlessly around a parking lot late at night, or hang out alone near that abandoned wearhouse on Meridian Street."

"Please, just think about little old us."

Offering a gentle reminder to women and children to stay close to their homes after dark, Stehr was nonetheless quick to point out that a close-up still-image of an attractive rape victim "does occasionally work wonders for Channel 13's viewing figures."

"While we hope that most Hoosiers don't have to go through these things, nothing creates more buzz across the airwaves than an adorable school photo of a missing 8-year-old," he continued. "So, do not leave your home at night unless you're absolutely certain that your inevitable murder would make great television."
