Carl Green, 48, died September 23 in his near
south side home. Green, who never married, was devoted to his three pet Columbian
tegu lizards. “He called them his kids,” reflected Green’s sister Margaret
Green Parker. “I used to ask him why he wouldn’t get a dog or something that
could love him back, and he just said that his lizards loved him in a way that
was deeper and more pure than any dog or even human ever could.” Shrugging, Parker added, “The
last I heard from him was he called me asking me to remind him to go to the pet
store first thing in the morning, because for the first time ever he’d run out
of food for them. He said he explained it to them, and made sure they knew that
he loved them, and that they loved him back and understood and would be okay until
morning.” Sometime in the night, the trio of four-foot lizards escaped their
enclosure and consumed Green’s face.
