Randall Wayne Sherman, 22, died October 19 in Delphi, IN. Sherman was on the first day of a new job at Gray Turkey Farms. Farm manager Gerald Anderson, 56, spoke to reporters about the incident. "We hate it when a new guy starts on a rainy day," Anderson said. "They always ask if it's true that turkeys will drown in the rain because they're supposedly so stupid they look up with their mouths hanging open, all dumbfounded." Pausing to spread a shovel full of bedding, Anderson continued, "Everybody always asks that, but this kid wanted to go out with the turkeys to see for himself. It was coming down pretty good, and he was yelling back at me that he didn't see any of the turkeys with their heads up. Then he put his own head up--I guess to show me what he expected them to do." The Carroll County Coroner's office determined that in raising his head and yelling during the brief downpour, Sherman aspirated some rainwater and drowned. Gray Turkey Farms reported that all its turkeys were safe and accounted for.
